The man in the photo, taken at McGill University in 1951, is 17-year-old Leonard Cohen. Apart from the neat white shirt, knitted vest and tie, he's also wearing a blindfold, and his ears, fingers and hands are encased in padded restraints which prevent movement and cut off all sensory stimulus.

The Man Next Door

In 1951, Leonard Cohen took part in Dr. Donald Hebb's notorious sensory isolation experiments, for which student volunteers were paid the then-princely sum of $20 a day.
Donald Hebb (1904-1985) was under much pressure from the Defense Research Board of Canada, who funded and oversaw these experiments, not to publish his results, which were of great interest to the military but would have come as a shock to the public.
Some of the volunteers were unable to stand this torture for more than a few hours. Some tore off the bandages and banged on the door of the isolation chamber, screaming and crying to be released. Hebb was making great strides in "changing attitudes" as well as lowering IQ in his sensory-deprived subjects, not just undergraduates but allegedly also orphans. When Hebb finally did publish his research, he claimed he had experimented on rats.
Leonard once told me he enjoyed these experiments in which he learned to dissociate his consciousness, leave his body, and go on long voyages through the universe. The experience was so pleasant, he volunteered to be placed in a flotation tank while on LSD. He enjoyed that, too.
It's called "dissociation" also known as "shock" - saints experience it when they're being tortured or burned at the stake. So, one would guess, do their torturers. Dissociation works both ways. It explains Nazi death camps and why we may feel ecstatic after surviving a car accident.
Ann believes this is also Cohen. Is this where the poetry came from?
We now know that D.O. Hebb's sensory isolation experiments became the foundation for torture techniques used by the CIA etc. in its secret prisons around the planet. Hebb, a neurologist, had CIA clearance. Small children - mainly orphans and aboriginal children -- arrived in his laboratory courtesy of McGill and the RCMP and were kept in sealed off areas of the Allan Memorial and Montreal Neurological Institute. Some were caged.
Having access to human guinea pigs made Hebb's research that much more impressive. He also worked with rats and monkeys, and had a favourite ape he called " Pooky ." McGill, at the time, was controlled by a network that included British-American and Nazi-trained eugenicists.
It would be interesting to do a textual analysis of all of Cohen's writing - someday when I have more time I plan to do that -- combing his poetry and novels for references to the secret program that he appears to have been part of for most of his life. Up to now, his critics seem to have overlooked all those references to hospitals, (Nazi) doctors, psychiatric experiments, electroshock, which litter the pages of his early work. Perhaps some day we'll get to read his first novel, Ballet of Lepers¸ which no Canadian publisher would touch in 1957. It might give us deeper insight into the real causes of his lifelong depression and anxiety.

His two alma maters, McGill and Columbia, were both epicenters of MK-ULTRA research into mind control during the years he attended. As were certain studios and film-making teams at the National Film Board of Canada, an arm of British intelligence that brought our Leonard to national attention in 1966, with the film "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MR. LEONARD COHEN."
As was the Silva Mind Control organization, where Leonard met [wife] Suzanne in the late 1960s, was another front for brainwashing. As was Nashville, where his musical career took him later. And let's not forget the Chelsea Hotel, where he hobnobbed with musicians and CIA programmers like Kris Kristofferson, who was often mentioned when Cohen introduced his song "Chelsea Hotel #2" -- about the time he had sex with the depressed and drug-addicted singer Janis Joplin. I have always found it the creepiest song in Cohen's repertoire.

These early days, when he was just an obscure young man in search of a destiny, determined everything that happened later on. Early on, he "volunteered" for something and the rest is musical history.
There were times I witnessed Leonard's programming either in operation, or failing to operate properly. That is, when I lived next door to him and some of his friends. By the mid-80s he had many people grouped around him.
Cohen & Diamond in the 70's
It would be hard to imagine or find a more charming, generous, affable, funny guy to have as a neighbour . Unfortunately, though, that was only one side. Cohen is multi-faceted, which is a nice way of saying he has different personae, or "alters." I wouldn't like to guess how many but this would explain why, while living next door, I witnessed events that would have been less likely if he had a single core personality. Instead, he had Hazel helping him manage his relationships, no easy task.
The Allan Memorial Institute is a half hour walk from his house on the park off Saint Laurence Boulevard. In the summers he frequented the swimming pool behind the Allan, where doctors, nurses, and other hospital staffers hung out with people from the Entertainment scene. Years ago, I was told by an ex-nurse and former hospital orderly that the purest cocaine stolen by staff from the hospital pharmacy could be bought beside the Allan Memorial pool, and was reserved for the Beautiful People of downtown Montreal, like some of my neighbours who, in many ways, behaved like members of an exclusive club.
Mind controlled entertainers and public figures -- and this also applies to certain mind-controlled politicians, like Pierre Trudeau, a friend of Leonard - often require handlers to help them manage the problems of being programmed multiple personalities. Handlers can also be famous, like Kris Kristofferson, who was also Janis Joplin's lover. Once you know this secret side of the music business, it's easy to see how it operates in plain sight, beyond the awareness of ordinary fans and the gullible public.

My reaction -- WTF?? How did I miss that? It makes a LOT of Cohen's enigmas make sense.
I'd been a fan of Leonard Cohen since the sound track of "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" (1971). There were years when I took some of his song stories very seriously. All through my youth into my 30's, Cohen would return with a new album of song-stories similar to the Jerzy Kozinski stories I read - the protagonist lived his life like a spy though unconnected with any agency or group. A 70's review of Kozinski's protagonist read, 'a childhood in which society refused the individual a place within it, resulting in an adult who, refusing the place society insists he occupy', wages a secret war with mainstream society.
As a youth I identified with that enigmatic protagonist. All through the 70's and 80's I believed certain movies and songs contained clues for 'awakening' youth. Very much like Winston in Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four bought into the rumor of a super secret loose association of rebels. That same theme is in The Matrix, too. It was also in this 1980's MTV music video of Cohen's "First we take Manhattan"
Looking back, what 'secret conspiracy' was Cohen implying? The conspiracy of chic people with hip fashion sense? Zionism? Depends on who's watching it. When I watched it 30 years ago, I was a young, virile, Leftist that was 'inspired' and excited by the video. Analyzing it with the knowledge I've learned since about 'memes', which are 'bytes' of programming, I can identify several going on within it - some which have nothing to do with Cohen's lyrics or intentions.
In his stage persona, one would think Cohen is the handler, but a deeper look into the lyrics show he's not. His songs have often references to bondage & discipline, and Sado /Masochism, with the implications of being a 'switch', in a strictly heterosexual context. Cohen seems to have suffered the same unconscious emasculation by Feminist programming that was drilled into 60's hipsters as the rest of us.
But if it was unclear that Cohen was handled just like all the 'stars', the dead bang proof happened several years ago, at the age most pop stars are going into retirement. Cohen took a hiatus (due to a bad love affair or just mid-life crisis) to become a Zen Buddhist monk for five years. While he was busy serving his Zen master - literally as a house servant - his estate planner-attorney and his music agent (a woman), stole his life's savings. Plus they did it with such beautiful crookedness that it took Cohen several years to get some of it back through litigation.
Such is routine in Hollywood. Stars are 'handled'. Everyone around them at their peak is in the cult, even their wives. If you think of Robin Williams, and what Randy Quaid tried to reveal about "Star Whackers", I understand why he said "excuse me for not dying" on his 80th birthday last weekend.
I admire Cohen again for his sheer tenacity. Happy birthday, Leonard.
